Abstract
The tight junction of the epithelial cells in the mouse epididymis were examined by ultrathin sectioning and freeze fracture. Results obtained were summarized as fellows.
Ultrathin sections of the canal epithelium from the various epididymal portions revealed the fine structures of the typical tight junction without showing regional difference along the epididymal canal.
In freeze fracture replica, tight junction was composed of parallel and cross linking strands in the albumin side of the epithelium and looped or free ended strands at the basal side.
In the head portion, tight junction was composed of mainly parallel strands with numerous anastomosis being 9.81 in average number. In the body portion, tight junction area was the widest, and had 12.73 strands on the average which were the most numerous among the epididymal portions. In this region, looped and blind ended strands were tended to increase, whereas anastomosing strands appeared to be decreased. In the tail portion, tight junctional strands were counted to be 9.31 on the average, and were noted to have the least anastomosis but have the most abundant looped strands.
Differences in tight junctional fine structure of the various portions of the epididymis were discussed correlating with sperm maturation along the course of the duct.
